Real Estate with Heart: How Bronwyn Ashdown Built a Career Around Her Kids and Her Community

When Bronwyn Ashdown joined Barfoot & Thompson over 20 years ago, she didn’t just start a job – she began building a career that would grow alongside her family. Now the Branch Manager of Barfoot & Thompson Takapuna, Bronwyn reflects on her journey as a working mum in real estate, balancing the demands of motherhood with a passion for property, leadership, and lifelong learning.

Bronwyn had both of her children, Karn and Isla (now 16 & 18), while working as a real estate salesperson; they’ve been part of the ride from day one. “My flexibility allowed me to be heavily involved in the kindy committees, manage the sports teams, and host after-school playdates,” she says. “The “Mum” friends I made through this time are still my best friends to this day and have been an incredible support through many challenges everyone faces when raising a family.”

One of those challenges came when Bronwyn divorced while her kids were still very young. At just 30 years old, with full-time care of her children and a mortgage to manage, she needed a career that could offer both financial stability and time with her family – Real Estate gave her both.

“My days had limited time, but once the kids were fed and in bed, I’d get back on the laptop and the phone to prepare for the next day. That structure allowed me to earn an income that opened up so many opportunities for my kids. Opportunities I simply couldn’t have created with a part-time role or a full-time salaried job.”

It wasn’t always perfect. Bronwyn admits there were moments when work crept into family time. But she’s quick to point out the value of perspective. “When I remembered why I chose real estate in the first place and prioritised family again, things always seemed to improve, not just at home but also in my career. You need non-negotiables and good habits to thrive in most things in life.”

In the middle of it all, she even found time to upskill. She completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and Property and earned her Branch Manager’s license, all while raising two kids. “Graduating from Massey with Isla as a newborn was one of my proudest personal achievements.”

Now, as a leader herself, she’s passionate about paying it forward. “I’m proud that my kids have always been welcomed into any office I worked in and now, I get to create that same supportive environment for other parents on my team.”

Her advice to parents considering a career in real estate?

“Get a good mentor. Someone who will keep you accountable, stay positive when things are tough, and support your work and personal ambitions.”

And the most rewarding part of it all?

“100% the flexibility. Being able to meet my career goals and my personal goals, while still being there for my kids. That’s what it’s all about.”
